For me, it usually starts with the vocals. Then it’s how the production and the vocals mix together. And it didn’t take long for Minneapolis’ Lazenlow to win me over. Lazenlow consists of lead singer Gillian Needham, producer Mike “Ghost Channels” Ryerse, and drummer Mo Bluntz.
I first heard about them when I they put out a project with Minneapolis MC Brandon Pulphus called Blind Luck, I was drawn in by how well their dark toned electronic style mixed with Pulphus’ vocals. When I saw they were getting ready to release a new album, The Panic Button, I was instantly excited. The more I listened to Needham’s vocals against the production of Ryerse, the more I was drawn to the music they were making.
I had a great chat with Needham and Ryerse (who are also engaged) about how they met and formed the group. I really enjoyed learning about Ryerse’s production approach, both their journeys in music, took more of a deep dive into the songs that stood out the most to me on the record, and more. Their new album The Panic Button is out now on all streaming platforms.
