Bob Mould, of the legendary Minnesota Punk/Hardcore Band, Husker Du, played October 28th and the Cedar in Minneapolis and Sunday, October 29th at the Turf Club, in St Paul. I was fortunate enough to get to see both nights. The Cedar, I just enjoyed the music. The next night at the Turf, I had my camera (and thank you Turf Club for helping me with the Press Pass!)
You wouldn’t know Bob Mould was playing a solo electric set. There was just this massive wall of sound coming at the audience. It was so on-point and direct. He was a one-man wrecking machine. Super engaging with the audience, gracious and funny. The Turf Club is just a stone’s throw down the street from a music store (now a hair salon) where Husker Du started out—playing in the basement after the store closed for the night. And a little south is Macalester College, where a young Bob Mould went to college.
Bob Mould has done many other things besides Husker Du. His band, Sugar, were huge circa 94-95….I remember driving everyday back n forth to college listening to the CD, “File Under Easy Listening.” His solo work, “Work Book” and, “Silver Age” should be in everyone’s rotation.
I won’t write much about Mr. Mould. His music speaks for himself. He was gracious enough to stay until the last fan received their picture and autograph. I must admit, I was a bit shy. I didn’t speak to him (I was the dork in the Husker Du hoodie); but he has been such an important person in my musical upbringing and really for the State of Minnesota. He’s influenced legions of bands and performers. David Grohl famously said, “If there was no Husker Du, there’d be no Foo Fighters.”
